El término marica y sus variantes, se usa en todo el mundo latinoamericano, incluso en Brasil, como uno de los insultos más frecuentes contra los homosexuales. La misma hostilidad recae sobre las lesbianas, que sufren grave violencia por parte de sus familias, ex-amantes o compañeros, inspirados por la lesbofóbia que trata el lesbianismo como un insulto y una amenaza a la cultura machista.
Dentro de los países de esta región, Cuba se destacó en la década del 60 por la violencia con que persiguió, apresó y obligó a exiliarse a centenares de homosexuales, identificando la homosexualidad con la decadencia capitalista. Libros y películas como "Fresas y Chocolate", de Tomás Alea Gutierrez y "Antes que anochezca", de Reinaldo Arenas, revelan la intolerancia homofóbica de un período que felizmente está siendo superado.
Pese a la generalizada ideología fuertemente marcada por el machismo, que redunda en prácticas homofóbicas violentas y discriminatorias, en 1969 se fundó en Argentina el primer grupo de defensa de los derechos humanos en América Latina, que a partir de 1971 fue conocido Frente de Liberación Homosexual.
En 1978 se fundaron grupos gays en México y Brasil, y en la década del 80 en Perú, Colombia y Venezuela. En los años 90 el movimiento GLT se organiza en Chile, Uruguay, Puerto Rico y Jamaica.
Hasta mediados de los años 90, la homosexualidad seguía siendo considerada un delito en Chile, Ecuador, Cuba, Nicaragua y Puerto Rico. A comienzos del siglo XXI todavía persisten leyes contra la sodomía en dos países: Puerto Rico y Nicaragua. Ecuador es un bello ejemplo: saltó de la edad de las cavernas a la modernidad, volviéndose el segundo país del mundo después de África del Sur que incluyó en su Constitución la prohibición de discriminar por orientación sexual.
Persiste, sin embargo, en todos los países latinoamericanos y caribeños, una legislación moralista represiva que generalmente se aplica con mayor rigor y de forma discriminatoria contra los homosexuales, considerándose la homosexualidad como agravante en la corrupción de menores, reprimiéndose el travestismo como atentado contra el pudor o identidad falsa, excluyéndose legalmente a gays y lesbianas del acceso a la unión civil, en la medida en que los códigos civiles y constituciones de los diversos países restringen el casamiento o el reconocimiento como familia e inclusive el concubinato, a las parejas de sexos opuestos.
Como consecuencia del pasado colonial y del esclavismo, una característica significativa observada en la mayor parte de los países latinoamericanos y caribeños es el alto grado de violencia física y opresión moral que se ejerce contra travestís, gays y lesbianas.
En Brasil se repite de norte a sur el mandato "viado (pédé) tem que morrer!" y en todo el continente padres y madres dicen públicamente que preferirían tener un hijo ladrón o una hija prostituta antes que un gay o una lesbiana. Los obispos de la iglesia católica y, últimamente y con mayor rencor, los integrantes de las iglesias protestantes fundamentalistas, atacan gravemente a los homosexuales en los medios y en los púlpitos, censurando las campañas de prevención del SIDA para gays y obstaculizando la legislación de unión civil para personas del mismo sexo. Esas mismas sectas patrocinan clínicas de cura para homosexuales.
Aún más graves son los crímenes homofóbicos: la prensa internacional constantemente ha denunciado el asesinato brutal de gays y travestís en casi todos los países de la región, crímenes que exhiben rasgos de crueldad y son objeto de una impunidad repugnante. Muchos de esos homicidios tienen como autores a escuadrones de la muerte, la propia policía y, recientemente, grupos neonazis.
Pese a la inexistencia de estadísticas policiales sobre crímenes de odio en la región, disponemos de información bastante fidedigna sobre crímenes homofóbicos documentados en los dos países más grandes de América Latina: en México, según la Comisión Ciudadana de Crímenes de Odio por Homofobia, fueron asesinados 213 homosexuales en el período 1995/2000, calculándose que el número real debe ser tres veces más alto. Para Brasil, de acuerdo con los registros del Grupo Gay da Bahía, se han documentado 1960 asesinatos en el período 1980-2000, 69% de gays, 29% de travestís y 2% de lesbianas, lo que da un promedio de un homicidio cada dos días.
En números absolutos y relativos, no cabe duda que es en América Latina y el Caribe donde ocurre el mayor número de crímenes homofóbicos del mundo. Un triste liderazgo para un continente tan cordial con los turistas y con la alegría de vida y la exhuberancia de la cultura homosexual como marcas registrada.
